HEI/SBH Appoints Michele David, MD, as New Board Chair

HEI/SBH is proud to announce the appointment of Michele David, MD, as the new Chair of our Board of Directors. We are deeply grateful to Diane Currier for her many years of hard work and service in this role, and for her ongoing service as a Board Trustee.

Dr. David currently serves as the Chief of Clinical Quality and Safety at MIT. Previously, she was an Associate Professor of Medicine at the BU School of Medicine until 2011, Co-Director of the Haitian Health Institute at Boston Medical Center, and Director of Community Health Programs at Boston University, Center of Excellence in Women’s Health. 

Dr. David has focused her career on addressing issues of health disparities and cross-cultural medicine. She has conducted educational campaigns on diverse health topics and has participated in the development of a cultural competence curriculum. Throughout her career, she has also taught medical students, residents in training, graduate students, and mentored junior faculty. Dr. David has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. She had partnered with Health Care For All to work on legislative measures to reduce racial and ethnic health care disparities in Massachusetts as a Columbia University Advocacy Fellow. She is also is a member of the Massachusetts Public Health Council, the policy arm of the Massachusetts DPH appointed by the Governor of the Commonwealth in 2007. 

Dr. David has been the recipient of several awards including the Massachusetts Health and Human Services William A. Hinton Award. This award was given in 2010 in recognition of her commitment to public health, especially the improvement of health care for communities of color. In 2012, she received a leadership award from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. In 2014, she won a “Patient Safety Award” from Atrius Health. She was named a “Boston Super Doctor” three times. 

Dr. David joined HEI/SBH’s Board of Directors in 2018. As Board Chair, Dr. David will continue to bring her years of clinical expertise and lifelong commitment to health equity to help guide our organization. We are grateful for her deep commitment to our work and excited for this new chapter in HEI/SBH’s history.
