St. Boniface Hospital has been preparing for and managing Hurricane Melissa for more than a week. Our thorough disaster preparedness protocols helped us protect the hospital from flooding and other damage. These protocols helped keep staff and patients safe, allowing us to continue providing round-the-clock care throughout the storm.
Dr. Miliane Clermont, Director General of SBH, checks in on each hospital service during Hurricane Melissa.
Erick Jolicoeur, Manager of Oxygen and Generator Systems, prepares to deliver oxygen to each hospital service despite the pouring rain.
We are grateful that the communities we serve did not experience major flooding or structural damage to roads and houses.
However, the driving rains decimated crops during a time of high food insecurity in the south, and we fear for the impact this will have on our communities in the months to come. We are currently working with community leaders to assess the situation and see how we can help keep people stable and nourished now that many people’s main source of food and income has been destroyed. We are also preparing to treat a possible influx of cholera and pediatric malnutrition cases as a result of the storm.
Many other areas of the south experienced catastrophic flooding and damage, and at least 20 people have lost their lives due to the storm. As the wind and rain calm, we will continue assessing the situation with our partners throughout the region and will try to provide support when and where possible.
