Center for Infectious Disease and Emergency Care

All people deserve access to ‘round-the-clock acute care.

High-quality, affordable, and accessible emergency care is hard to come by in Haiti. The majority of care centers are concentrated in large cities, and most are barely equipped to provide even basic care—let alone 24/7 emergency care. Most hospitals in the country are also not equipped to manage infectious diseases, which often require patients to be kept in specialized isolation rooms to keep contagions from spreading.

When Hurricane Matthew devastated Haiti in 2016, St. Boniface Hospital emerged as a hub for emergency care and infectious disease treatment and prevention in southern Haiti. Through this experience, it became clear that the more than 2.3 million people who live in southern Haiti needed greater access to high-quality emergency services. Thanks to a generous grant from the USAID American Schools and Hospitals Abroad program through the generosity of the American people, and the hard work of our partners at Build Health international, in 2017 we began building a comprehensive care center for both infectious diseases and emergency care: a first-of-its-kind facility in Haiti.

The St. Boniface Hospital Center for Infectious Disease and Emergency Care (CIDEC) officially opened in March 2018 and has since served thousands of patients. From fevers to road accidents, to tuberculosis care, the CIDEC is helping to save lives every day.
