This past Monday, St. Boniface’s own Conor Shapiro was honored with the Young Alumni Award by his alma mater, the Boston University School of Public Health. Shapiro earned a Master’s of Public Health from BUSPH in 2007, and this year he was one of three alumni selected by the school because of their “extraordinary contributions and dedication to the field of public health on a local, national, or global level.” BUSPH honors the contributions of three of its alumni each year; recognized along with Shapiro were Dr. Mahesh Masky, who has led several nonprofit and government public health policy organizations in Nepal and is currently Nepal’s Ambassador to China, and Christina Severin, the current CEO of the Beth Israel Deaconess Care Organization, an accountable care organization.
In his comments as he accepted the award, surrounded by fellow alumni, Shapiro spoke of what drives him and HEI/SBH as a whole. ”I believe the lesson of putting ‘humans first’ and not just looking at statistics has been the key to our work at St. Boniface. In Haiti there is a popular phrase used often by the poor: ‘tout moun se moun’ or ‘all people are people.’ This continues to be a lesson and a challenge for our organization and our work.”
All our staff and community are incredibly proud of Conor and thank him for the great energy and effort he puts into leading HEI/SBH.
