Congratulations to Health Equity International’s Board Chair, Dr. Michèle David, for receiving the 2026 MIT Excellence Award for Service to the Community.
Dr. David and her team at MIT received this award in recognition of their work developing the MIT Health Ambulatory Safety Net (ASN) and Population Management Program.
An ASN is a system of checks and flags that helps ensure high-risk patients receive the tests, screenings, and follow-up care they need within an appropriate timeframe. This system prevents patients from falling through the cracks, especially those with concerning test results or an elevated risk of a serious condition.
Dr. David wrote the grant for this project and, once funded, built a team and has served as its Principal Investigator. As outlined in an MIT News interview with Dr. David, the team initially focused on following up with patients who have a high risk of colorectal cancer, or who missed a screening.
An overview of the MIT Ambulatory Safety Net Program’s initial work on increasing colonoscopies for high-risk patients.
In one year, patients in this group with scheduled or completed colonoscopies jumped from 29% to a staggering 97%. The team has since implemented similar ASNs for breast cancer and behavioral health screenings, and has recently developed prostate and lung cancer safety nets.
All of us at Health Equity International congratulate Dr. David and her team for advancing this critical and life-saving work, which is helping more patients receive the essential care they need—exactly when they need it.f
