Video: Mobile Clinics for Moms and Kids

HEI/SBH began partnering with UNICEF in November 2011 on a project designed to bring health care to the doorsteps of mothers and their children in rural, southern Haiti. The goal of the 13-month pilot project is to reduce the rates of infant and maternal mortality and malnutrition in our region. For many women in rural Haiti, getting to a hospital or clinic means hours of walking—sometimes in tough, steep terrain up and down mountainsides. For a pregnant woman with young children, the challenge of reaching a trained health care practitioner is insurmountable. With very few women able to access transportation, HEI/SBH decided to bring the hospital to the women with a series of mobile clinics designed to reach 8,000 children and 3,000 pregnant and lactating women over the course of a year.
