Remembering the 2021 Earthquake, Three Years On

Three years ago today, a devastating earthquake struck southern Haiti. The disaster claimed thousands of lives and left countless others injured and displaced. Entire communities were reduced to rubble.

The pain of that day remains with us. So, too, do the memories of those we lost. Those friends, parents, neighbors, children—they will never fade from our minds, no matter how much time passes.

Over the past three years, we have worked tirelessly with our friends and partners across the south to help survivors heal and rebuild. All the while, Haiti’s humanitarian crisis continued to grow and present immense new challenges. At times, the problems we faced seemed insurmountable. But we never gave up—and we never will.

Even in the darkest of times, we have never been alone. When we work together, we can do anything. And together, we have. More than a quarter million patient visits for earthquake survivors; a network of healthcare facilities elevating the level of care across southern Haiti; a permanent orthopedic surgery program; a new oxygen production system—these are just a few of the ways we’ve advanced our mission despite every challenge.

While there is still much work to be done, we are profoundly grateful for our incredible community. Thank you for helping us prove what is possible in accompaniment with the people we serve. As we honor this solemn day, I know our shared work is creating brighter ones ahead.
