Weathering year after year of crisis has been extraordinarily difficult for everyone in Haiti. For healthcare facilities, it has been nearly impossible.
The country’s ongoing crises and drastic reductions in global foreign aid forced many healthcare facilities to close. Only 12% of hospitals in Haiti are fully operational as of November 2025, according to a recent report from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Another OCHA report states that only 10% of hospitals with inpatient capacity remain fully operational.
St. Boniface Hospital is humbled to be among the hospitals that have stayed open with no interruption to services.
This is a reality we continue to fight for every day, as challenges in Haiti continue to mount. But we believe in the strength of our staff and the community we’ve built over the past 42 years. And we believe that together, we can continue to provide the best possible care to every patient who comes to us in need.
Over the past four months, our maternity ward, neonatal intensive care unit, and emergency room have been at or over capacity nearly every day. Our surgical center has also been extremely busy performing an average of 290 surgeries per month, nearly half of which were emergencies. We don’t yet know if patient numbers will continue to climb throughout the year—travel remains difficult and often dangerous for many. We are doing our best to prepare for every possibility and will ensure every patient is given the compassionate care they deserve.
Supply chain challenges have eased, for now. For more than a year, violence and chaos in Port-au-Prince made it impossible to retrieve shipments. While the process remains difficult, new supply routes and customs partners have helped us get critical resources on a more reliable schedule. Today, St. Boniface Hospital is well-stocked for the first time in far too long.
One of the achievements we’re most proud of in the past year is completing our new solar grid, thanks to support from our friends at Build Health International and 121 Consulting. This grid is helping us to significantly reduce our dependence on noisy, polluting generators and expensive, hard-to-find fuel. We’ve been able to reinvest these savings into our lifesaving programs and services, as well as other operational priorities that help keep St. Boniface Hospital running smoothly.
We will keep you updated on St. Boniface Hospital’s progress and challenges as 2026 continues to unfold. Thank you for your ongoing support of our work, and for believing in a brighter future for Haiti.
