Disaster Response

We have led many life-saving disaster relief efforts throughout our four-decade history.

The people of southern Haiti rely on HEI/SBH to deliver the urgent care they need in an emergency like an earthquake or hurricane. We work in partnership with the Haitian Ministry of Health (MSPP), community leaders, grassroots organizations, and health care facilities throughout the region to to meet survivors’ needs for clinical care and essential supplies.

Our clinicians travel to the most remote communities to provide quality care in the wake of disaster.

We also work with MSPP, local health officials, and a wide network of national and international partners to strengthen the overall health system in southern Haiti, building the region’s capacity to respond to future emergencies.

Information on our responses to epidemics and pandemics is available in the Infectious Diseases section.

  • When a 7.0 magnitude earthquake decimated Haiti on January 12, 2010, HEI/SBH sprang into action.

  • HEI/SBH responded immediately to the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck southern Haiti on August 14, 2021.

  • In 2016 Hurricane Matthew devastated Haiti’s southern peninsula. HEI/SBH was on the front lines of the recovery effort.
